According to sources, the President has suspended all the meetings of the 225-member house till 16 Novemeber. The unpredictable move on the part of Sirisena came after he expelled PM Wickremesinghe, who said that he remains to be the PM and vowed to prove his majority.
A political battle is playing out in Sri Lanka’s capital Colombo after Mahinda Rajapaksa staged a dramatic political comeback as the new PM.
On this constitutional conflict, Ranil Wickremesinghe said that the swearing-in of Rajapaksa is illegal and unconstitutional and I will prove my majority in Parliament.
Sirisena wrote to Wickremesinghe, saying he had been removed from the post of the prime minister.
There was an earlier attempt too to remove Wickremesinghe but that was defeated on the floor of the parliament with Wickremesinghe cobbling the numbers against the combined attempts of Sirisena and Mahinda Rajapaksa.
