The cable cars run a total of 33 kilometres between the Bolivian cities of La Paz and El Alto and links 10 lines that traverse the city high above the streets belowThe helter skelter street and noise from the streets below are mere scenery to those travelling in the calm, quite cabins above the fray.
“The cable car is calmer, safer and you can see the landscape, everything,” said Rosemeri Tapia as she made her down to La Paz with the city spread out below her.The cabins descend from 4,000 metres at El Alto down to 3,640 metres at La Paz.The government invested 740 million US dollars in the cable car system, which was built by the Austrian company Doppelmayr.
The project took a total of seven years to complete.
Bolivian President Evo Morales inaugurated the first line in 2014 and its construction and completion have been a cornerstone of his re-election campaign for a fourth term this coming October.
